My bike had only had 2 oil changes, at 500 mi the change from the break-in
oil, and at 3000. Both dealer serviced, so I assumed they used good oil
(they certainly charged me enough). The bike was also not thrashed when
cold. Actually, it wasn't thrashed at all. The mechanic's best guess is that
some of the internals may have been manufactured out of spec. Regardless of
the cause, the important thing is that the matter was handled to my
satisfaction.
