Hi everyone.  I am very new to the ST list and have been enjoying the useful content I've been reading.  I feel this is a subject that I may be of some help on.  I have been a Respiratory Therapist for 19 years and have been riding bikes for 11 of those years.  I work in Intensive Care as well as Emergency Room.  I have seen many motorcycle injuries.  Some severe and some minor.  IMHO the benefit of protective gear cannot be understated.  It is true that there is no way to protect against all injuries, but rationalizing your way into not wearing protective clothing will just make things worse in an accident.  Good gear can make the difference between losing some skin on the pavement or just having a hole in your jacket or pants.  I have seen patients who would have lost their foot if it weren't for wearing some good motorcycle boots.  I have taken care of many riders who would have had closed head injuries if they weren't wearing helmets.  The worst cases are almost always the!

ir on fire wearing nothing but a pair of sandals and speedos.  As for the idea of motorcyclists being held liable for their injuries which could have been prevented, well that is just idiotic.  If that was the case, people who are injured in a crash who didn't buy a car with airbags would be liable for their injuries simply because they made a choice to be less protected than the the guy who plowed into them with the $50,000 SUV with 20 airbags in it. I hope everyone is using some protective gear.  You don't realize you need it until it is too late.
