Most stainless steels are non-magnetic, but a very few are magnetic.  Most
non-stainless steels are magnetic, but some ordinary steel can also be
non-magnetic - of course then it isn't quite so ordinary, but it just goes
through a different heat process.

The base material is the same, although small quantities of various other
metals are usually added, depending on the characteristics required, such as
elasticity, rigidity, brittleness, hardness, etc - even color.

It can also be said that there really is no such thing as "ordinary" steel -
every steel has a grade, which is a measurement of very specific chemical &
physical properties.  It's all made for a specific purpose, although some
purposes are more general than others.  Re-bar for buildings, sheets for
cars, and crankshafts are steels, but with very different properties.

Maybe someone who really knows about this stuff can clarify?

Obviously I've never tried sticking a magnet to stainless steel. I
assumed that all steels would be magnetic. But I'm now deducing that
what makes stainless steel, "stainless", is the lack of iron, and
therefore it's not magnetic.

Ok, all you smarty pants, what metals are actually in stainless steel?
