RE: [ST] New ST owner - questions

Rupert,

Congrats on the new ride. You've done well to find this list (and it's
associated site); it's a great resource.

What kind of "spongieness" do you actually have there in the front binders?
If the lever is continuing to move to the bar after applying, there may
indeed be air in the that needs to be bled out. If it's more a case of
excessive lever travel before the pads contact the rotors, it's a different
problem.

In that case, you need to clean the rings of brake dust from the area where
the piston and the rubber seal of the bores meet. I can explain how I choose
to do that later, if you wish. As for the tyres, I think you'd have trouble
finding BT57's or even BT56SS lately. For sportier performance, many are
switching to the newer BT-010, or for the BT57 swap, I think BT-020's area a
good bet. Others like the Avon Azaro (in various compounds), I use Metzeler
Sportec M-1.

Oil- the other oft-recycled list question. I use the bike-specific Mobil 1,
it did better in tests at (US-based) Motorcycle Consumer News. You'll get a
dozen different takes on that, as you will for the tyre question.

Now tell me (off-list) where exactly are you, and where are you originally
from? I am 60 miles west of downtown Beantown. FWIW, I have a Triumph group
that is growing and quite active. Check us out, but be aware that we're not
the "putt around town" types, don't line up bikes outside the pub, and
prefer riding well away from that traffic-bound metro area.

We are at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ntsr

Also, I have a track day coming up that you MUST attend! It's really a
training thing more than anything else, so it would be a great refresher for
you. See also: http://www.triumphtrackday.com

Welcome!

Subject: [ST] New ST owner - questions

I picked up a 99 ST today :)
I have been without a bike for 4 years :(

Last bike was a 91 VFR and before that a 94 VFR.

First impression - Nice bike!

The engine is a stonker. Like the looks (ended up with Red but wanted
BRG). They say it throws out less heat than a Daytona 595 but it still
throws out quite a bit of heat (it is bloody hot out today though).

One thing I was not totally happy with was the front brakes. They seemed
a bit spongy. The bike has 13.6K on it and nothing has been done to them
so perhaps they just need bleeding?

Also it has the original front tire on it. My guess is it will need
changing soon. The rear tire is almost new. He decided to go with
another Battlax but he said it is a SS model which means the rubber is
harder in the middle than on the edges?!

Does anyone have any experience with this Battlax BT57 SS? If the front
does not have enough tread to get an inspection should I get another
Battlax for the front or ditch them both and go with another brand? What
are the favorite tires for this bike?

Do you guys use the Triumph Mobile 1 oil or just regular Mobile 1 oil?

Rupert (Just outside Boston, MA)
