Re: [ST] 06 ST Seat Q

 Welcome to the list Brian.

I'm of the same opinion as you when it comes to touring comfort. I invested in a Sargent seat for my 99 ST and found it to be one of the best investments I ever made for that bike.

I'm disappointed that Sargent arent making a seat for the 05+ model and the word is there wont be one anytime soon for various reasons.

I have investigated various replacement seats, but I am still running the stock seat on my 05 ST. After 30k plus kms I am used to it and find that with a bit of moving around I can spend all day riding. Having said that, I know I will need to look at replacing it before to long. I have heard of a few owners with the gel seat and no one really raves about it. I have a Triumph gel seat on my Daytona 675 and find it to be only marginally better than stock.

Apparently the gel seats like to hold the heat, which may be something for you to consider if thats an issue for you already.

On the subject of heat, my bike is still stock in the exhaust dept. The only time its been an issue for me is on hot (30C +) days, stuck in traffic or poodling about at 60kph or less. My 99 ST used to put out a fair amount of heat as well, so I guess after 85,000k's aboard that bike, I just got used to it. With a particularly cold winter upon us on the island of Oz, I am finding it to be of some comfort. I know 3C is not cold where you are from, but for a sun lover and beach dweller such as me, this is torture. I always wear full protective gear, but I will be happy when I can shed at least one layer.

Depending on your riding style etc, suspension is something that you may well look at before to long . The ST is notoriously softly sprung and equipped with very low spec suspenders that typically need replacing around 30k - 40k kms.

Hope this helps.

Brett.

Subject: [ST] 06 ST Seat Q

Further to my âIntro,â IMHO, the biggest factor for touring comfort is having a
good seat. I read the various commentaries over the past couple of years
debating the merits of the Corbin (which I have on my Yamaha GTS) against the
Sargent saddles. Much as I love my Corbin, and tend to agree with the general
comments made previously on the list that the mounting was âfiddly.â In my case
I eventually successfully transplanted the Yamaha seat lock and installed the
Corbin on hte bike. A short time later, I returned the hardware to the stock
saddle which I ride around town to take advantage of the flat profile. Now when
I tour, I toss the Corbin on the bike, which just sits on the frame rails. Yes,
the stiff seat does take getting used to, but does stay comfy many more hours
into a dayâs that the stock seat.

Thus, I am inclined to try a Sargent for a change, although a review if their
website shows that they have not yet developed a replacement saddle for the
05-07 ST yet, so, at the moment, only the custom saddle treatment is available
at Sargent. However, before I go that route, I was curious if anyone has
purchased the Triumph gel seat? Can anyone with Corbin/Sargent saddle time
offer up a comparo?

I recently and briefly tried a friendâs gel pad (as opposed to a complete
saddle) on an FJR. I was not all that impressed with the added height or the
âsquishinessâ of the seat texture. I suspect being an ex-roadracer (Club level
only and emphasis on the "ex"), I have some built-in biases for low, hard seats!

Having said that, I will be receptive to any positive reviews anyone has on the
Triumph gel seat.

Thx,

Brian
